Tuesdays with the Conductor
You know nothing Marius Louw!
A very warm welcome to the 7th edition of the Tuesdays with the Conductor newsletter.
They say in times of political instability and war, the best commodity to buy is gold. Gold: The Quintessential Crisis Commodity. The precious metal tends to shine as a safe haven asset when investor confidence in financial markets falter. During wartime central banks often increase their gold reserves to hedge against economic turmoil and currency devaluations.
It would seem apt that the safe haven bet this past weekend would’ve been the men in red and black from the gold-rich fields of the Witwatersrand. Johannesburg otherwise known as Egoli (place of gold) was definitely a fortune maker for those that backed the Lions and the graveyard of dreams for those who like me thought the depth in the Leinster’s squad would’ve been enough to secure the win.
Winter is coming to The Republic and Marius Louw was the only South African captain to claim a win over a team from north of the wall. Having another player on the Lions team with the nickname 'The Bone Collector' also adds more mythic weight to these often under-resourced, courageous men. Munster, Glasgow and the Ospreys all managed to claim victories over South African teams this past weekend. The Lions have now given themselves a realistic chance to make the Top 8, but in order to do this, they have to win another major battle this Saturday against a Munster side loaded with Irish internationals and one South African Viking in the form of RG Snyman.
Elsewhere, some more poor decisions were taken on my part. Having targeted the unders points line in the Fijian Drua v Hurricanes game all week, I suddenly made the strange decision to take the Drua +11.5 handicap. While they had sufficient chances to cover the spread against the Hurricanes, who were at one point down to 13 men, this never happened and it was a poor start to the weekend which showed a small profit.
Moving on to other matters, I am incredibly excited to announce that Conductor Bets has become an affiliate of Play.co.za. Play is a premium online sports betting and gaming platform for the South African market, launched in September 2022 by entrepreneur JP Van Der Spuy.
Van Der Spuy, who originated from a fintech background, has combined his passions for sports and digital marketing to create Play. He is well-known for his collection of sports cars, including Ferraris, Aston Martins, Lamborghinis, and McLarens.
Play.co.za is also the sponsor of the Cape Town 10’s, which started as a rugby event founded by Western Province rugby legends Bobby Skinstad and Robbie Fleck. Over time, it has evolved into a multi-sport extravaganza featuring beach volleyball, netball, soccer, and more. This event which takes place in February each year has become a staple on the sports calendar, offering one of the best live experiences with live music performances and lively beer tents. Residents of Cape Town are also likely familiar with the regular occurrence of an airplane flying overhead, trailing the Play banner. It's clear that Mavericks faces some stiff competition in the Western Cape skies.
Looking at the upcoming games for this weekend I’ll be taking a big strike on the Blue Bulls overs points line against the Ospreys in the United Rugby Championship. Ospreys had a superb win against the Stormers but I feel it will be a step too far against an angry Bulls side at 1350 metres of altitude (you better believe the altitude fucking matters). Expect the Bulls, who should have Marco Van Staden and Ruan Nortje back, to put a lot of points past the Ospreys. Click on the image below to open a Play account and get in on the action. Play has a very attractive welcome offer of up to R9000 in deposit bonuses and free bets.
In Super Rugby it’s currently a race to the bottom for the Crusaders and the Highlanders. In a previous newsletter I mentioned Fergus Burke would be back for the Crusaders for their Australian tour but he picked up an injury and was excluded from travelling. If the weather is good in Christchurch I’ll be looking at taking an overs bet on the total points line of 57.5 with Burke surely back at 10 and possibly some more heavy artillery in the form of Scott Barrett and David Havili. Hohepa has been disastrous off the tee for the Saders.
In the Gallagher Premiership it doesn’t come more mouth watering than Harlequins v Northampton Saints at the Stoop on a Saturday afternoon. Although Harlequins do have a Champions Cup semi final against Toulouse the following weekend I’m expecting them to go strong for this fixture. With an afternoon kickoff, this game should be absolute box office. I’m expecting a high points line for this game but anything around 60.5 will see my money as long as the weather is good in London.
I am incredibly happy to announce that it was a very successful beginning to the Conductor Bets Football betting service and we’re looking forward to another good week of winning bets. As a bonus I have included a 7 day free trial for the football bets. Click here to join the action for the rugby and the football - https://www.patreon.com/user?u=83508629
The conductorbets.com site is live and I will be adding other bets on the site throughout the weekend! I would also like to thank everyone for their continued support so far as we grow this community. Also please feel free to leave comments below the article if there is anything else you would like me to mention in the next newsletter, or a particular upcoming fixture you would like my thoughts on. You have to click on the “Read Online” link in the top right of the newsletter to be able to leave a comment.
Cheers and have a great punting week!
